If it’s a private party, it’s unlikely that you’ll reach 500 guests. But if you do then it’ll be classed as a large event, and you may need to adhere to slightly different rules. Most private parties tend to be for about 50-150 guests. So just make sure you know how many people are coming (that’ll be useful information for a number of other things, too).

You may wish to ask guests to bring a plate of food with them to keep costs down. But another great way of limiting what you spend on feeding the masses is to book a food van such as a pizza van, a fish and chip van or a burger van. They will turn up, cook on demand for your guests and perhaps even charge a favourable rate in return for lots of guaranteed business. If your budget is higher then you’ll be considering hiring in a catering company. There are plenty of them to choose from, so take your time selecting the right company and the right menu for your celebration.

Don’t forget to consider toilets! Many guests will not be huge fans of portaloos, but the good news is that there are mobile units available which even come with running water. They are clean and safe, and a great choice for a post-pandemic party where everyone might be even more concerned with hygiene than normal. Book your mobile toilets early though, as you can bet that there’ll be a huge demand for them this summer.

It’s a fantastic idea to have a live band or DJ at your party to keep your guests dancing into the small hours. However, if you are close to neighbouring properties then it’s good manners to go round and warn them about the potential noise, agreeing a time when all powered music will be turned off. When choosing a band, go for something that everybody will like such as a covers band. You could even call in a ceilidh band who can organise dances and help break the ice between guests who don’t know each other that well.
