How are portable toilets emptied?

Our latest guide looks at how portable toilets are emptied and discusses how often you should empty a portable toilet and portable toilet cleaning.

Understanding how portable toilets work and how they're maintained is essential for anyone considering rental services, so let’s start by looking at the fundamentals of a portable toilet!

How portable toilets work

Portable toilets are available with either a traditional flushing system or with vacuum technology. At Wight Event Toilet Hire, all our luxury portable toilets are traditional flushing toilets, which use water from a concealed tank to flush waste into a holding tank beneath the seat. Standard portable units rely on specialised chemicals in the holding tank to break down waste, eliminate germs, and control odours.

How are portable toilets cleaned?

When you receive a portable toilet unit from WET Hire, it will arrive in pristine condition and it will have been thoroughly pressure washed externally and deep cleaned on the interior. Once all odours, bacteria and dirt have been eliminated, the unit will be deodorised and restocked with all consumables.

How often do you need to empty a portable toilet?

The frequency of emptying depends on usage patterns, but typically a single portable toilet can accommodate about 10 people over a 40-hour work week before requiring service. For longer-term rentals, servicing is usually scheduled once or twice weekly, though this can be adjusted based on specific needs.

The emptying process requires specialised waste service tankers equipped with vacuum pump technology. These vehicles connect to the unit's holding tank through a sealed system, ensuring maximum hygiene and safety standards during waste transfer. This professional approach to waste management is crucial for maintaining sanitary conditions and complying with environmental regulations. At WET Hire, our own fleet of in-house vacuum tankers allows us to empty and service all our luxury toilet units.

It's important to note that portable toilet waste management isn't a DIY operation. In the UK, the Environment Agency strictly regulates liquid waste disposal, and only licensed companies can transport waste to specialised treatment facilities. At WET Hire, we hold an upper tier licence from the Environment Agency which qualifies us to remove liquid waste and dispose of it ethically, in line with prevalent legislation.

In addition to emptying our own luxury toilet units, we also offer the following services:

•    Cesspit emptying
•    Liquid waste disposal
•    Septic tank emptying and cleaning
•    Tanker servicing
•    Hazardous waste disposal
